The top end is gorgeous, and as I am highly sensitive to treble problems, I think I will be keeping it as my player. It is very fast once it has imported your music library and again it sounds lovely. Songbird has improved a lot since I last used it. ![]() The same problems occur with SqueezeBox server and it is something to do with the fact that iTunes handles artwork unlike any other media server on the planet, so when your alternative player "imports" said artwork, half of it always goes AWOL. TBH I lay the blame fairly and squarely at Apple's door for this farce. There are two problems in that there is no sample rate change on-the-fly like there is with Pure Music, Decibel and all the other Audiophile players.Īnother is that artwork display is flaky, with some cover art being imported from iTunes correctly and other artwork inexplicably not displaying. For a free app it is great and IMO beats the sound of the four times more expensive Pure Music. Sonora sounds wonderful, stripping away fine layer of fug from the sound picture and cresting a lovely sense of atmosphere. Sonora used to be available on the App Store but has since gone open source and looking at the credits in the "About Sonora" window I see that it uses the Audio engine by ie the same one used in their $33 Decibel software. The other two players are the most interesting for me. ITunes 11.2 is an improvement over iTunes 10 of that there is no doubt and it sounds perfectly acceptable in its new guise but the lack of FLAC support still rankles, although Linn now offer downloads in ALAC format I am sick of Pure Music crashing on me so it has been booted into the long grass until the developer can come up with something more stable. ![]() Its cushioning is also relatively firm but more responsive, according to athletes who have tested both models. The Beacon offers a thinner sole (26 mm under the heel) with a lower drop (6 mm compared to 8 mm for the 1080v11). Some runners have also complained about the new heel counter, which can potentially irritate the Achilles, so the 1080 v10 seems a more prudent choice. The newer version comes with few changes, so there’s no reason to rush to the v11 if you already have the v10 or can find it for cheap (during sales, for example). Hopefully, NB will address this point in the next iteration and confirm the 1080’s edge in the cushioned trainer category.Ĭomparisons – New Balance Fresh Foam 1080 v11 vs.: New Balance Fresh Foam 1080 v10 However, a seemingly minor change at the heel counter ruined comfort for some testers. In summary, the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080 v11 is a very good, versatile, and sturdy running shoe, ideal for daily training. Finally, one of the previous versions’ issues is still there: the midfoot fit is still a little tight, which may be uncomfortable if you have wide feet. For this reason, it may be wise to stick to the v10 for now (it’s cheaper anyway!). It’s far from ideal, and it’s difficult to know in advance if you will have the same issues without trying the shoes. ![]() It seems that New Balance slightly changed the design of its Ultra Heel and several testers experienced discomfort or even pain in the Achilles tendon as a result. Unfortunately, the back part of the upper is not as convincing. Besides, the Hypoknit mesh is breathable despite its thickness, which makes the shoe comfortable even on warmer days. The front part is flawless-the toe bumper even goes lower over the toes, which takes some pressure off and gives more space. Nothing else to say on this front, and that’s a good thing. The rubber-covered outsole (soft under the forefoot, firmer under the heel) is sturdy and provides a good grip. A versatile model overall then, except perhaps for recovery runs. The only downside is that some runners didn’t find the shoe pleasant at slow paces because of the heel’s harshness. This makes the 1080 v11 particularly suitable for daily training and long distances as well as faster tempo sessions. If you liked the previous model’s cushioning, you will undoubtedly like the one of the v11! Also, some runners note that this configuration has the advantage of being slightly more responsive. Striking the right balance between firmness and softness is always a subtle balancing act, and NB continues on the middle path to reconcile the two as much as possible. The cushioning is still firm, although some testers note that the forefoot is slightly softer. The stack height is 30 mm under the heel and 22 mm under the forefoot (8 mm drop). Let’s start with what hasn’t changed: the sole and its Fresh Foam X foam. For the most part, it did, except for one important detail that divides runners. Considering the success of the v10, the American brand could have just decided not to take any risks and make only a few changes to this new version. ![]() ![]() The New Balance Fresh Foam 1080 v11 is a running shoe for daily training with generous cushioning. ![]() ![]() ![]() And while you’re at it, take a picture and tag it #PROFUSIONCURRY on Instagram! ![]() ![]() Be proactive about it.Īs far as bases, if you're a 1N3 ground linguist, these are probably your options:įort Meade, Maryland (near Washington D.C.) Osan AFB, Korea Hickam AFB, Hawaii Fort Gordon, Georgia Elmendorf AFB, Alaska Lackland AFB, Texas Don't try and wait until your last year there and you get orders for somewhere else before you decide. Ask around what you need to do to get back to DLI to learn a new language. A tip: when you get to your first base in a couple years, tell your supervisor that you might want to re-language. I would guess that for Japanese you'd need a 3/3 since it's not your assigned language (they recently changed this for many languages), which would net you $400/mo.Īfter you serve your initial tour (likely to be three or four years) at your first base, there's a good chance if you really want to re-language that you can. FLPP caps out at $1,000/month (meeting the minimum standards for your assigned language will net you $200/mo, it goes up if you score higher). However, if you are able to pass the DLPT in Japanese, you could get FLP (Foreign Language Proficiency) pay if you score high enough on Japanese, and then after learning your language at DLI you would get additional FLPP for that language based on your scores. Traditionally Japanese was taught only to particular officers (who would usually go on to work as liaisons), and I would imagine it's the same now. If I pass the DLPT will I end up learning a different language anyway? I would not mind a few years in Monterey learning a new language at all, this is just curiosity. Hopefully, I answered your most pressing queries, but if I've created more questions, just ask. There are other places, but a lot less likely. I was an Airborne linguist, and most of us end up in Nebraska and Arizona. The Asian languages will likely see Hawaii, I know Russian goes to Alaska - the others I'm not sure. If you can't keep up with the one you've got, they won't send you back for another. Maintain your target language though to better your chances. Typically, if you're in a lower-flow language, one not as high in demand or overmanned, you may get the chance to go back to DLI. Yes, you will eventually have the opportunity to "re-language," but not everyone will be accepted. ![]() I would definitely say count on something other than Japanese, though. That's something you'll have to look into at Monterey. I'm no longer a linguist, and I'm not sure what changes have been made to the foreign language proficiency pay regulations in the last two years, but you may or may not get paid for it depending on your score. Once you're out of BMT and attending DLI, you can opt to take the DLPT in Japanese. ![]() Odds are you'll be sent to one of those if you score high enough. The higher your score, the more likely you are to learn one of the Asian (Korean, Chinese) or Southwest Asian (Arabic, Dari, etc) languages. I'm not sure how true this is in practice, however. You will take (or have taken) the DLAB in which your score supposedly determines which languages you qualify to learn. From everything I've heard, Japanese is in fact "officer only." It's just not in demand/targeted enough to train the enlisted force for intelligence purposes. I'm assuming you're going in as a 1N3X1 - the ground linguist, vice Airborne Cryptologic Linguist. Is that true? If I pass the DLPT will I end up learning a different language anyway? I would not mind a few years in Monterey learning a new language at all, this is just curiosity.ĭo linguists have the opportunity to learn a new language and transfer somewhere new? For example, if I didn't like the language or country I ended up in, after X amount of years would I be able to learn Korean and move over there?ĭo most linguists end up outside the country or do they mostly stay stateside? If stateside, what bases usually have linguists? I hear from some that it is an officer-only language. I hear mixed things about Japanese in the military. I enjoyed my time in Japan, I just didn't enjoy working for Japanese companies and thought it might be nice to go back some day. I got a 128 on my DLABīackground: I am joining at 25 after spending 3 years in Japan working as a translator/interpreter/general wage slave. I recently signed my Cryptologic Linguist contract and will be heading to basic training on Dec. I'll start off by saying I already spoke with my recruiter about some of this, but he suggested I try elsewhere because he didn't know much about the position. ![]() |
